Thanksgiving! There are many countries that celebrate Thanksgiving in different ways at different times of the year. Listed below is a list of Thanksgiving celebrations from around the world. You are to pick which one you want to do and depict the holiday in your picture. Each country can be picked only once.

Fairuza Dresden-Kwanzaa

“Aunty Fairy?” Fairuza cringed at her niece’s voice. They only resort to that baby nickname when they want something. “Yes Maebe?” “Um, Mr Darling is getting us to do a class presentation on Thanksgiving in different cultures.” Fairuza’s brow raised at the mention of Mr Darling. He was quite yummy for a stuffy Social Studies teacher. “I got Kwanzaa and I was hoping you could help me, you know, presentation wise?” Her aunt smiled. “Of course I will!” Relief washed over Maebes face. “Oh thank you! There is no way I could do it on my own.” Fairuza gave her attention back to Astor’s jacket she was letting out, Maebe was still hanging around. “Something else you want to share?” “Uh yeah… It’s due tomorrow?” Fairuza stared at her niece. “Oh you had better be joking Maebe.” Maebe kept her gaze on the floor. “Unbelievable!” She muttered under her breath and started to look through her rolls of fabric. Maebe smiled slyly. That was soo easy and turned to leave for her room. “Can you grab the green thread from that box Maebe?” Maebe obliged her aunt, after all she was doing her assignment. “These are all green.” “I want the one called Ocean.” “They’re all called Ocean. Oh wait, they have numbers. Which number?” “Oh dear, I’ve forgotten! I guess you’ll just have to sit here and pass me each one until I find it.” Fairuza smiled sweetly as Maebe’s face set in horror. “And you better close the door, we don’t want any distractions.”

“Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday about the festival of the first harvest of the crops. It begins on December twenty-fifth, I mean sixth, twenty-sixth, and lasts for sixth-sorry-seven days.” Fairuza stifled a laugh at her usually over-confident mastermind. It had taken until four in the morning but they had managed to pull it together Thank you Google! Her arms were killing her from sewing and plaiting her hair but she remained still and poised. “The name Kwanzaa, comes from a phrase which means “first fruits”. Which is why we have the fruit, uh, here.” She pointed clumsily at the table of fruit. “Um, okay, on her dress is a Kente Pattern that originates in Ghana. This one is the, umm-” Maebe flipped out her note cards. “Absua Ye Dom pattern. Representing “the extended family is a force” and it celebrates the positive aspects of the extended family system of that culture.” Maebe went to sit but Fairuza cleared her throat. “What?” Maebe mouthed. Her aunt tipped her head. “Oh right!” Maebe jumped back up to the front. “The candles are rep-representa-tive of the sun’s power and are held in a candle holder called the Kinara.” Maebe took a breath. “There is one black candle, three red candles and three green candles. The black candle represents the people, the red candles represent the struggles and the green candles represent hope for the future.” Hopefully my future includes a date with Mr Darling.
